What distinguishes a membrane from a wall is relational intelligence: a wall refuses exchange, while a membrane mediates it. A system that can encode what proved nutritious and what proved toxic begins to develop lawful selectivity — and this, the argument goes, is where intelligence originates. This structure addresses the perennial tension between tyranny and atomization — between imposed unity and meaningless fragmentation — by locating coherence not in shared content but in shared protocols of boundary respect.
