From Thermodynamic Survival to Cultural Meaning

Drawing on Carlo Rovelli's distinction between direct and Indirect meaning, this framework proposes that semantic complexity has evolved through successive, irreducible layers across cosmic history. Direct meaning — information with immediate causal bearing on an organism's thermodynamic Viability — constitutes the most primitive register: the survival signal. Biological evolution elaborates this into goal-directed behavior, homeostasis, and reproduction. The Emergence of nervous systems then introduces a qualitatively new dimension: felt experience, Normative valence, and the interiority of subjectivity. Each level is dependent upon but not reducible to its substrate.

Language marks a Phase transition rather than a mere increment. It performs a double transformation: retroactively reframing meanings from all prior biological and experiential registers, while simultaneously generating entirely novel semantic domains — theory of mind, reflexive self-awareness, metaphysics, science — that have no analogue below the cultural threshold. These new domains operate through Indirect meaning: information relevant not because it directly sustains survival, but because it increases the probability of acquiring directly meaningful information. Crucially, Indirect meanings can themselves generate further Indirect meanings, producing a recursive, self-amplifying architecture of semantic complexity.

The philosophical payoff is a naturalistic account of meaning that avoids both reductionism and mysterianism. The relationship between thermodynamic foundation and cultural Superstructure is analogous to that between paper and text: the former is a necessary condition for the latter without determining its content. This preserves the genuine novelty and irreducibility of human meaning while grounding it in an unbroken causal chain running from physics through biology to culture.
