How Genuine Authority Is Recognized During Civilizational Crisis

This perspective reframes the question of authority during what it calls a kairos — a moment of civilizational rupture carrying genuine existential stakes. The current kairos is identified as the advent of AGI and the broader transition it represents. In such moments, conventional markers of authority (institutional credentials, social capital, rhetorical dominance) become insufficient precisely because they were calibrated for a different order of challenge. The question becomes functional and specific: whose proposals reliably orient us through this particular rupture?

The argument is that the crisis itself performs a kind of selection. If the deep structure of the challenge concerns mind, meaning, wisdom, and Collective intelligence, then those who have been rigorously investigating these domains possess a form of understanding that is not self-appointed but crisis-revealed. Their authority emerges because the nature of the problem demands exactly the kind of insight they have been cultivating. This is not an argument from expertise in the credentialist sense — it is an argument from fitness between understanding and challenge.

Two poles anchor this account of legitimate authority. The first is onto-normativity: genuine authority tracks increased intelligibility, putting us in contact with something more real that simultaneously transforms and orients the knower. The second is chirotic relevance — the capacity to speak with precision to the specific shape and stakes of the present moment. Neither pole alone suffices. Perennial depth without situational relevance becomes abstract; situational urgency without deep intelligibility collapses into reaction. Together, they constitute a basis for authority that can be recognized and freely extended — without coercion, manipulation, or reduction to mere power.
