Intelligence, Rationality, and Wisdom as Nested Self-Transcending Capacities

John Vervaeke distinguishes intelligence, rationality, and wisdom as nested but genuinely distinct capacities, each recursively operating on the one beneath it. General intelligence is characterized as recursive Relevance realization integrated with adaptive anticipation — the capacity to zero in on what matters and get ahead of environmental demands rather than merely reacting. Yet the very heuristics that power this capacity systematically generate self-deception: misclassifications of relevance, failures of anticipation, over-generalization, and under-discrimination. Rationality emerges when intelligence is turned upon itself — deploying general cognitive resources to acquire strategies, attentional skills, and character virtues that counteract intelligence's endemic biases. These are not reducible to formal logic but are integrated psychotechnologies that enhance fittedness to reality while reducing inner conflict.

Wisdom, in turn, is rationally self-transcending rationality — what Vervaeke terms ratio Religio, a properly proportioned connectedness across all dimensions of knowing and being. It generates a reciprocal opening: deeper insight into the world affords deeper self-knowledge, which in turn deepens world-knowledge. This addresses the self-deceptive foolishness that rationality alone cannot overcome.

Paralleling this intelligence-to-wisdom continuum is the noetic continuum of consciousness transformation — from insight through flow to mystical experience. Consciousness here functions as higher-order recursive Relevance realization, and its higher states represent meta-Optimal grip: not task-specific flow but the flow of existential orientation itself. When wisdom and higher states of consciousness mutually afford each other, the perennial problems of self-deception, alienation, anguish, and absurdity become reliably addressable. Vervaeke's proposal is that this mutual Affordance is what enlightenment actually is — a functional achievement fully explicable within extended naturalism, requiring no supernatural ontology.
