Reclaiming Agency from the Curated Information Environment

There is a deep mismatch between the information environments humans evolved for and those we now inhabit. In ancestral contexts, perception was a reliable proxy for local reality — the distribution of what you saw roughly matched the distribution of what existed. That epistemological shortcut is now systematically exploited. Algorithmically curated feeds optimize for engagement, not representativeness, and our perceptual systems have no native defense against this: we continue to treat the contents of our visual field as ground truth about the world. The downstream effects are well-documented — emotional contagion, political polarization, and a chronic miscalibration of salience.

The more underexamined consequence is the distortion of perceived agency. Attention migrates toward high-stimulus, low-agency domains — geopolitical crises, Civilizational risks, electoral outcomes — while high-agency, high-consequence domains like local relationships, professional craft, and community are systematically underweighted. This produces what might be called fascination without traction: the phenomenology of engagement without the feedback loops that make engagement meaningful.

The proposed corrective is an agency-first reorientation of Sensemaking. Rather than filtering the feed, the move is to invert the question: identify the domains where you have genuine leverage, and let those anchor your attention. Where direct agency is absent, proxy action — targeted support of those who do have leverage — is far more metabolically efficient than sustained anxiety. Crucially, this is not merely a productivity heuristic. There is an Autopoietic logic at work: Sensemaking oriented toward actionable domains generates learning and increasing competence, which expands the scope of future agency. Overwhelm, by contrast, is self-reinforcing and self-limiting. The Alignment of attention with agency is, in this framing, the foundational condition for any meaningful epistemic or practical development.
