Reclaiming Human Presence from the Logic of Escape

Jamie Wheal's central argument in Recapture the Rapture identifies a convergent deep structure across three apparently distinct ideological families: Religious eschatology, techno-utopianism, and New Age spirituality. Despite their surface differences, each operates on the same four-part logic — the world is fallen or broken; an inflection point is imminent; an elect group will be elevated through it; therefore acceleration toward that point is justified regardless of collateral damage. Kurzweil's Singularity, Musk's multi-planetary ambitions, Neuralink's consciousness-uploading thesis, and evangelical Rapture theology are treated as structural homologs rather than opposites.

The critical failure mode these ideologies share is what might be called the exclusivity problem. Each promises transformation for a self-selected in-group while rendering the fate of the majority irrelevant or acceptable as sacrifice. The acceleration logic compounds this: if the breakthrough is near and inevitable, present-tense suffering becomes a rounding error. Wheal argues this is not a marginal feature but a core design flaw — these are escape narratives, not repair narratives.

The book's constructive project pivots on the double meaning of its title. Against the uppercase Rapture of ideological escape, it proposes recovering lowercase rapture — the ecstatic, connective, and meaning-making capacities documented across contemplative traditions, peak experience research, and initiation practices. The argument is that these states are not supernatural gifts or technological unlocks but learnable, sharable human capacities. The civilizational question becomes: can we build the Scaffolding for that kind of rapture at scale, without the exclusivity clause?
