Reconciling Ancient Biology with God-like Technology

E.O. Wilson's tripartite diagnosis — Paleolithic emotions, medieval Institutions, god-like technology — names the core mismatch driving civilizational instability. Human neurophysiology was largely fixed in the Pleistocene; the Institutional architectures of the nation-state, the church, and liberal democracy were forged across the last millennium; but the technological leverage available to individuals and states now operates at a scale and speed that neither emotional nor Institutional evolution has remotely tracked. The result is a compounding misAlignment that would have strained even the most robust versions of modernity's organizing frameworks.

Daniel Schmachtenberger's framing sharpens the epistemic problem: the Enlightenment's empirical gains — the Pinker-Ridley-Rosling data on poverty, violence, and health — are real and defensible, and so are the counter-trajectories in ecological overshoot, weapons of mass destruction proliferation, and Institutional legitimacy collapse. These are not competing narratives where one side is simply wrong. They are simultaneous Exponential curves running in opposite directions. The cognitive demand of holding both as true, without collapsing into either techno-optimism or catastrophism, exceeds what most existing Sense-making traditions are equipped to support.

The deeper problem is not merely psychological but structural: there is no widely shared framework for what might be called Exponential meaning — a coherent account of value, purpose, and orientation adequate to a period of simultaneous accelerating gain and accelerating loss. The absence of that framework is itself a Civilizational risk factor, because without it, collective navigation defaults to whichever partial narrative aligns with prior disposition.
