Surplus Coherence: How Meaning Emerges Across All Scales of Existence

A deep structural homology runs through the entire complexity stack: at every level — molecular, cellular, organismic, social, cultural — components integrate into wholes that possess emergent properties irreducible to their parts. This surplus cohesion is not merely an Ontological curiosity. The argument is that it constitutes the very substrate of what organisms like us register as meaning, and at its most intensified, as the numinous or sacred. The "god experience" is reframed not as a special category of consciousness but as the phenomenological signature of Emergence itself, encountered whenever coherence exceeds expectation.

This reframing carries significant consequences. Ordinary perception already involves this surplus — every act of binding sensory data into a unified scene generates more than the inputs contain. The mystic, the meditator, the person in flow states: none of them are accessing a categorically different reality. They are attending with unusual precision to what is structurally implicit in all experience. The difference is one of resolution, not of kind.

Religious traditions, viewed through this lens, become technologies of attentional calibration — accumulated bodies of practice that make the always-present surplus of coherence phenomenologically available. This is not a reductive claim that dissolves the sacred into neuroscience. It is an expansive claim that locates the sacred's structural basis in the most fundamental pattern of reality: the tendency of integrated wholes to exceed the sum of their parts, and the capacity of conscious organisms to feel that excess as profound significance.
