The Evolutionary Architecture of Subjective Consciousness

The hard problem of Consciousness resists dissolution partly because discussions of subjective experience rarely specify a functional architecture. The plasma ball model addresses this by proposing that Mind 2 — phenomenal Consciousness — emerged through two evolutionary steps that together constitute a coherent structural account.

The first step is a binding event corresponding to the P-M-E architecture of Behavioral Investment Theory: perception, motivational state, and energized emotion converge into a unified affective field. Core valence qualia — pleasure and pain — are not incidental features but the binding structures that couple sensory input to motivational gradients, generating a proto-subjective field that enacts the body through feeling rather than explicit representation. This is the glowing core of the plasma ball: a semantic interior organized around value.

The second step is cortical elaboration. Posterior cortical integration produces a unified perceptual scene — adjectival Qualia like color and texture — while frontal working memory systems, including the visuospatial sketchpad and phonological loop, enable temporal extension and executive manipulation. The adverbial attentional system — delivering hereness, nowness, and togetherness — functions as the beam that illuminates specific content threads. Mind 2 is thus a virtual perspectival field: a broadcast architecture that models mindedness, carries valence, and supports temporally extended cognition without invoking any non-physical substance.
