Institutions once functioning as trusted cognitive proxies — public health bodies, elite universities, financial regulators — have been implicated in systemic failures of integrity. The loss of these proxies is not merely reputational; it removes a critical mechanism by which individuals managed cognitive load, forcing each person to adjudicate complexity they are not equipped to resolve alone.
